I just realized that each of my three cars so far has, starting with 0, had roughly 60hp more than the one it replaced (65, 132, 190). If that trend continues, 250- ish is next. I need to start researching what my options are.

That was my target sweet spot too. Then I got a car with 420 hp. I ’m a little worried I’ll never be able to go back.

With 420HP, You’re too high to come back down.

I’ve had the car for over a year and never saw that. I am ashamed.
But thank you.

After my previous car(e90 328i) my minimum requirements now are 300+HP on anything up to 4000Lb and 350+ HP absolutely on anything close to 4500Lb, on sedans.

The Accord Hybrid V6 has 250 hp from the engine only :o)
If you want something newer, I believe the Focus ST has something very close to 250 hp as well.
What is your price
range?

Wait, there is/was a Hybird V6 accord? The new ones, Aren’t they all 4 clyinders? and they make only 212HP combined?

145HP
192 HP
215 HP
225 HP
Generally upward but not much pattern, looks like possible a logarithmic scale of diminishing gains?

I may have peaked at 190 with my 2005 LJ. I’m intrigued by the possibility of buying a new Spider next year, because I’ve never owned a new car, but that’s less than 170, and any older Jeep I buy would have less than 190 as well.
An S2000 would be in the 250ish range, however, and is also on my wishlist.

Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. Engine is from a 1999-2004 Ford Mustang GT with 250 Horsepower before the wheels. Look ‘er up, check local government surplus auction listings, and do your due diligence before you jump into one.

I strongly considered buying one, the appeal of decent acceleration and good fuel economy was (and still is) very tempting. Only things that scared me were in case the batteries needed to be replaced and the fact it’s not an easy car to find, at least in the midwest

A log fit would be this:
Not the greatest R^2, but not bad either.
A second-order polynomial is a better fit:
... though obviously not as good as a 3rd order polynomial, which is IIRC able to be a perfect match for any four points, so...
If we go third order as predictive
, your next car will have 233hp.
![]() 09/14/2018 at 15:00 |

I went down 20hp (and 60lb ft of torque!) but also went down 550lbs

And you’re not finding anything older than 2004 at auction anyway. The last of the Tacoma PD’s 2004's were put up for auction this year, and they were

This is how it starts. I started out with a 110 hp Kia BEAST of a car.
Then I was like, “You know 180 hp might be better”, and I was happy for a while. Then I went to 260, then 300... and it was pretty good....
Now I’m at 400+. And looking at 500+.
And I can’t stop.

I like these, we/you/someone should do a 3rd order polynomial for 4 points on hp to weight ratio.

According to Google, Legacy GT has 250 hp. My order was 160/275/100 (never again)/250/405.

Curious as to what 500hp cars youre looking at as that is borderline supercar territory.
American muscle is what comes to mind immediately that will actually be addordable used- Gt350, hellcats, Zl1 camaro, z06 corvette, CTS-V
European japanese- jaguar ftype R, m5, c63/e63, R8, Gt-R
![]() 09/14/2018 at 15:22 |

Or a trig fit on power to weight for added hilarity.
![]() 09/14/2018 at 15:30 |

Z06 is my primary dream team candidate.
Other considerations include:
R35, GT350,
ZL1, CTS-V, Ftype maybe, R8 V10s haven’t come down enough to seriously consider, neither have gen 2 NSXes, and occasionally I go eyeball a C63 of some sort. Maybe I’ll take a look at the new GT500 when it comes out, although I expect a discouragingly robust super-markup.
I might make an exception for a Evora 400 but they are still all hanging out at 90-100k, so.

![]() 09/14/2018 at 15:50 |

OK, it’s ludicrously great by normal standards
, but counterpoint: only 4 points with minimal variation. If a second order fit wants to outright
impress me at that level it better hit three 9s.
![]() 09/14/2018 at 15:51 |

Mini! Not quite 250bhp, but ~160bhp and 2300 lb. How much does your current 190b hp car weigh?
![]() 09/14/2018 at 15:52 |
|
The best thing about being a third order fit is that his inflection point is about at his fourth car, so a fit would have his hp rate of increase go to beyond insane. If talking about a second order fit, they’d start falling off again.
![]() 09/14/2018 at 15:54 |

In replying, I got confused because you got confused. The one I called “not the greatest” was the log fit at .988. Which is good, yes, but not crazy.
![]() 09/14/2018 at 15:58 |
|
Yeah I copied the wrong number down.
I think the issue is that I come from an accounting background and for trying to predict something like future sales based on past seasonal trends, an r^2 of .988 falls under the category of “plenty”.

Mines been on a steady decline lately.
My latest is a meager 160hp (190ft-lbs), but the car is light and the gearing is perfect so it’s as much/more fun than vehicles I’ve owned with double that.

My recent experience driving a 300bhp Impala boat made me realize that my mini is just as fast. Weight play s a big part when it comes to acceleration. And you should be able to get a 1st Gen Cooper S for around $4k.

My current car has a close ratio manual so it’s much zippier than the power-to-weight ratio might suggest. The spec sit es all say it has a 6.7-7.0 0-60.

...kinda all over the place.

I’m trying to go about this a different way, I took one of my cars and went a smidge crazy with mods—bringing the wheel-horsepower from 170 to 250. That was fun. In the meantime, I’ve held my daily driver’s power levels to more reasonable amounts: 100, 130, 140, 155 (all claimed crank) so that I didn’t get bored with the 250-wheel in my Prelude.
Now, I’m slowly working to shoving an engine with similar power into a chassis about 400 lbs lighter than my Honda , and with rear-wheel-drive. If it ever gets finished, I’m hoping it’ll keep me entertained.
